Seems like it was done for books, maybe the admins/mods could make PC Game Categories.
New Mainstream
Older Mainstream
Puzzle/HOG/Match/Timed
Everything Else
New Mainstream would be like major recent titles like Sims 3, Damnation, GTA IV, Protoype, etc. Older would be maybe a 1 year or older titles.
Puzzle/HOG/Timed is pretty self explanatory as is Everything Else.
I only suggest this because I've talked to some people on here and we have similar interests in that we aren't too big on HOG, Matching, Puzzle, etc, and it's kind of a pain to sift through 25 of those posts to find one or two titles I might be interested in. Please consider this?

books is the most fast growing section so we reorganazied it.
If games will go fast enough we will continue your idea...
Though not sure about the "Mainstream" vs "Old Mainstream" difference.
Game Name ------------------ Classification
Prototype ------------------ Mainstream
Tomb Raider: Underworld ---- Mainstream
Tomb Raider: Anniversary --- Classic Mainstream (or maybe Older, Retro)
Madden 2009 ---------------- Mainstream
Madden 2008, 2007, etc ----- Classic Mainstream
GTA IV --------------------- Mainstream
GTA: San Andreas ----------- Classic Mainstream
Plants vs Zombies ---------- Mini Game (instead of the HOG/Puzzle/Timed tag)
Diner Dash ----------------- Mini Game
Bejeweled ------------------ Mini Game
Mario Forever -------------- Other
40+ Flash Games ------------ Other
Get the idea?
Basically any "Current Title" say released in the past 2 years OR that does not have a predecessor would be Mainstream, where as a game older than 2 years old or has already had a sequel made would be Older Mainstream as well. Maybe Mainstream and Older Mainstream could be changed to Current and Past. Isn't set in stone. Anyone is welcome to throw in names.
Mainstream OR Current OR Now Gaming (a play on Now Playing)
Classic OR Older OR Retro OR Past Titles (something along those lines)
Mini Games OR Coffee Breaks OR Time Wasters (meh)
Other OR Misc.
Also, seems like there are at least 20 or so new PC game releases a day. That's a lot to sift through, especially when they have no filter to search by. I understand many people love the HOG, Timed, Puzzle, etc games. Some don't. I love the main titles, some older ones. It's nothing to shy me away from staying an active member of Astatalk, but it's a pain to sift through 19 HOG games to get to the one that might suit my tastes.
I don't like the idea because it means someone is going to have to re-tag games as soon as they get out of date.
The problem is not the re-tagging. But that the re-tagging will never happen as people are inherently lazy. Hence we will be left with many games that are in the wrong place.
I think games should be sorted by "what they are", and not "what they are now".
Hence, a game will always be an RPG, an FPS, puzzle game, etc. and that doesn't change.
The keyword system isn't as good as it could be. And no one uses it right now.
I would willingly listen the critic for it
as for me I find it quite well but another point as you said it is still not correctly used
Stack Overflow's "tag" system is what I'd like our "keyword" system to be like. For this post I will use "keyword" to refer to both sites.
The things that I think are done better are:
1. A universal keyword cloud (http://stackoverflow.com/tags). This allows people to discover commonly used keywords to browse by and to see what's popular.
2. The ability for highly rated people to edit the keywords and descriptions of other peoples releases. This allows people who are active to correct errors as they find them. As far as I know there hasn't been any abuse with the 70,000 users.
3. Conventions on keyword format (lowercase hyphen delimited). This stops different people keyword-ing something as "Science Fiction","Science fiction","Sci-Fi", "Sci Fi", "sci-fi", and the other countless misspellings.
4. Keyword auto suggestion when making a new post. This helps correct misspellings before they happen and show the best keyword to use if there are multiple similar ones.
5. A guide on keyword-ing that many users have contributed to ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/229784/tips-for-effectively-tagging-questions ). This helps people who are confused by keyword-ing quickly get un-confused.
6. Ability to mark keywords as "Interesting". This means that when you view the list of releases the ones that have a keyword that you have marked as "Interesting" are highlighted with a light gold background.
7. Ability to mark keywords as "Ignored", though this doesn't hide them from you. Similar to marking as "Interesting", it simply makes the writing grey, so it stands out less.
8. A release's keywords are visible on the release list. This allows people to know what sort of release they are going to view.
With over 1,800k posts and 20k tags, they can't be doing much wrong.
