OS SupportPost your problemWhether $RECYCLE.BIN a virus ??

I run WinXP-pro-sp3 alongwith Avast-free AV in my Dell laptop. I keep all hidden files/folders incl. file extn.visible to identify threats. I also run a complete scan with e-scan toolkit(MWAV) once a week. Recently after running a portable software, e-scan became defunct, reason being incorrect system date(which is not true). I also detected hidden folders in C, D & usb-F drive(1-tb) as detailed below-
C-drive- "Recycler" having 2 recycle bins(names S-1-5-18 & S-1-5-21-1004336348-573735546-1177238915-1003) D-drive- 1-no. "Recycler" folder containing one recycle bins with name S-1-5-21-1004336348-573735546-1177238915-1003
F-drive - i) $RECYCLE.bin containing 2-no Recycle bins containing deleted files ii) RECYCLER containing 2-no recycle bins (named "S-1-5-21-1004336348-573735546-1177238915-1003" & "S-1-5-21-1960408961-842925246-682003330-500"). Most surprisingly when all the recycle bins contains actually visibly deleted files of about 86 Kb, while checked through properties, recycle bins contained deleted files ranging from 21.5MB to 832MB, none of which is visible at all even after enabling unhide folder options. Can any of my forum friends tell me about this anomaaly. Can I delete or erase one recycle bins. out of the two ? Is it a virus problem ?
Thanks in advance

this folder is not virus but the virtual space for recycle bin folder. when you delete something it goes there.

I will advise you to please use some more effective and reliable antivirus. Kaspersky Internet Security has good response till date. you can use it.

Hi bodmas,

Thanks for prompt reply. One thing is coming to my mind is that in one partition, one recycle bin should be sufficient, then why two bins or virtual spaces should exist because these are unnecessarily eating my disk capacity, which should be a maximum of 12%. Do you have any idea about huge invisible files present in recycle bin ? Why the files should not be visible in recycle bin ?
Regarding a good AV, I am getting E-scan corporate version(client edition) 3-yr licence from my friend at very cheap rate. Do you suggest this AV?

you can delete both recycle bins folder. no harm as when you restart your pc it will create one again and hence you will get rid of any unwanted recycle bin folder. if you get trouble in deleting them then log in in safe mode and then delete them.

restart you pc in normal mode and its OK.

Hi bodmas,
Sorry for late reply as I was out of station for 2 weeks. As per your suggestion, I deleted "$RECYCLE.BIN" folder which contained 2 no recycle bins. I didn't have to go to safe mode. But after rebooting both the recycle bins reappeared instead of one. However I was afraid to delete "RECYCLER" folder(hidden) containing two recycle bin type icons having long names mentioned in my earlier message. Of course, I am unable to detect any problems created by those unwanted bins. Should I let it remain as it is?
