The Asta Book ClubMembers Introduction

11 Jun 2009, 02:01

I am DancingTiger creator of the Asta Book Club. I am a declared book geek and proud of it! Remarkably enough I have never really know a lot of readers, so I always try to foist fantastic books on people who really don't care. Now I will foist them on you! I got my joy of reading from my mother, she is a declared harlequin format reader only. I ripped through her collection before I was 13, half time time It went over my head, then when I got to the so called romance part of my life I was really disappointed.
I enjoy books because they can take my mind even when it is drowning in pain and transport me into a meditative like calm and keep me there as long as the book is good. I enjoy historical fiction with accurate facts mixed with imagination. I love fantasy, and always wanted my own baby dragon, or to find out I'm the lost child of elves as a child. Paranormal fiction is really fun, especially when it is blended into our world so well, you sit and wonder sometimes, what if... I love books that make me think and stick around in your mind long after you finished. I enjoy classic literature the language is enticing and the characters and storys are so different from today. To be honest I just love books period.
I cant wait to read your suggestions, it is always wonderful to have other people share with you their most loved books. It brings a different light to the story as you read it.

So Asta Book Club members ( A B C , lol ) introduce yourselves, no worries personal infomation is optional. Tell us of you love of books and what you enjoy the most.

Hi, I'm Vixen. I've always loved reading, and since I didn't have many friends as a kid, books have been, and continue to be, my lifelong companions. I am a voracious reader and my pack rat tendencies lead me to hoard numerous paperbacks, hardcovers, and ebooks until my room (and computer) is fair to bursting with books.

My dream job would be working with the special collections, studying and taking care of old manuscripts or folios in the libraries & universities of London, Rome, Washington, and other such places. But I'd settle for just being a librarian or working in a bookstore. If I won the lottery, I'd design my home to have its own private library complete with fireplace, rolling ladders, & spiral staircases (think Disney's Beauty & the Beast).

Books are my safe havens, my teachers, my time-machines, my portals to other worlds/realities, and my windows to the minds, hearts, and souls of human beings. I admit to enjoying the escapist qualities of fiction, but I will occasionally delve into non fiction and the classics. I appreciate more being able to explore the finer nuances hidden within a text to reveal deeper themes and social issues.

My tastes run the whole gamut, from mystery, to romance, sci-fi, fantasy & horror, to the classics. I tentatively approach scientific theory, religious texts, and politics, but with a little motivation and some help from others, I can manage to get through them. However, I'm thoroughly addicted to romance. I love reading about the quirky foibles of relationships. I can cry with the best of them, and it's satisfying to read a good book that makes you feel that deep ache, the yearning in the pit of your stomach, for something good and honest and heartfelt.

I'm very excited to be able to meet and talk with everyone and I'm eagerly awaiting our future discussions.

Hi Fellow book lovers! I am a 52 year old computer tech for an Oilfield company. I am a book lover from way back. While my brothers and sisters would go outside and play, I would take a book and curl up under a tree and read. Still will do that only now I have to take my puter to do it. I had quadruple bypass 5 years ago and so I can't be real active and in addition I have diabetes that is causing me to lose my eyesight. So I love to be able to read on the computer because I can increase the size of the fonts so that it is easier for me to read. I am so glad I found this group and have downloaded the first book and will start on it later today!

Hi...

if anyone checked my profile you already know... my name is Anamarija (it's pronounced as if there is no j in my name) and I'm 18 years old... and in two weeks I'll be out of high school..

I love to read... Always have... Since I've learned how to read at the age of 5...
As some of the others have said I'm book geek and I don't quite fit in with other people since they don't share my passion for books, but finding other people who likes to read as much as I do is rare so I'm glad that I've found you all...

I've read a lot of books... From Homer (Iliad & Odyssey), Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky (Crime and Punishment), Émile François Zola (Germinal), William Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet & Hamlet), Dante Alighieri, Edgar Allan Poe and a lot of other authors whose books have changed view of literature... and also a lot of Croatia authors, because that's my mother tongue, and we had to read their books in school (but now I'm glad I did)...
In last year I've read a lot of books on English from historical romance to paranormal fiction, young adults and non fictional books...and it's impossible to say which one is better...

I'm glad that I've found this site, so I'm able to download books which I wouldn't be able to read, because they are not published in my country...

I'm Liv. I love to read. Anything. Everything. Anytime. Anywhere. I'm not on the net every day, mostly only weekends. To keep from getting bored during the week I hunt lions and giant meerkats...oh,okay...so I don't really hunt. I have read about hunting lions. Still looking for a book about giant meerkats :)

Hi
I'm Avid, and I am a readeroholic. I blame my mother for this particular addiction as she was the one who taught me to read by accident ( well she claims it was by accident- she was apparently trying to teach my elder brother to read, and instead taught me) Since then I just read anything I could get my grubby paws on, including all her catherine cookson and ( the shame) Barbara Cartland's she used to read. When I was little all my pocket money was saved up to buy books, and people would be given a list of must have's to buy for christmas and birthday's - nothing has changed there really I still do it... Recently because the children have grown up we downsized to a little cottage, and so I desperately need to downsize my book collection which is currently in storage. But it's really hard trying to decide which books I can't possibly part with. But beloved hubby assures me if he ever finds a suitcase full of money he will build me my library.

HI! Great idea, by the way! I'm Angel. I never really read a lot growing up, always seemed to fall asleep while reading - made for SLOW goin'. But, ever since Anne Rice's Vampire series' I've been a die-hard vamp book lover. I read just about anything about vampires, werewolves, fae, witches ... all paranormal authors basically. In Australia we have terrible internet service, so I'm not online a lot, but I would love to participate if I can. :)

Hi all, i have loved books for as long as i can remember and being an only child it was a great way to have adventures. I'm a software tester and love all sci-fi fantasy books. Vampires and werewolves are my weakness but i do love the old school like Eddings and Fiest. :)

Hi I am Lili. I have been an avid reader since I was about eight. I read everything, lol, and I write. I am always doing one or the other. I have never been part of a book club, but do have some friends who are almost as big of a reader as I am, so between us we chat about books and recommend. I read all genres of books, and would love to compare with anyone interested.

Hi everyone. I'm Carrie in real life :) and bookaholic here at astatalk. I'm 45 years old and a very avid reader. Like a lot of book lovers or so it seems I didn't have a lot of friends growing up. To make up for the lack of friends the characters in books became my friends and they were my escape to new words. I think I first started to love reading around the age of 9. My mom used to leave magazines like "Modern Romance" laying around and my dad would complain all the time about my being allowed to read such "trash". He never read the magazines and thought they were all about sex when in truth they weren't about sex much at all, but more focused on romance. For years I'd read anything I could get my hands on and as I got into my late teen's I focused mostly on historical romance. In my early 20's I had 2 kids and between them and work book moved to the back burner of my life. About two years ago my daughter in law and daughter were reading the "Twilight" series by Stephanie Myer and I picked up Twilight and finished the series 3 days later. My love of reading was back in full force. Now I still love romance best. I'm no longer limited in my taste to Historical Romance although I still like it. I love all the types of romance out there whether it be historical, paranormal, contemporary, fantasy, time travel..whatever. Ohh I like erotica too as long as it has a good plot. The only romance books I'm not really into though I've read a few and they were okay is m/m romance. I have nothing against it at all, I just don't get into it. I'd love to make friends with other readers.

Hi, my name is Maria. I share something with all of the people here. I LOVE to read and I began reading to escape my reality. I started when i was in Seventh grade eith Sillhoute adn Harlequin romances. They were awesome, then I skipped some books and went directly to Elizabeth Lowell, Julie Garwood, and Johanna Lindsey. Way to advanced for a seventh grader, jajaja. By then I realized that I could not stop, I had to be reading something every moment because if i did not I got really anxious and cranky. In short a true bibliophile. The problem came when I ran out of books to read. My mother called me crazy when I constantly asked her to take me to the bookstore. Then came one summer, before I had any internet,I had nothing to read and so I slept like 14 hours a day, because without books why would I bother to be awake. Anyway my culture does not encourage reading, so it is really difficult to find other avid readers. In my search for new books I don´t know how, but I´m eternally grateful, I found this webpage, Yay!!! I think this is one of the best things that happened in my life!!! You may think then that "what a boring life" but hey, I´m only 18, a book worm, and in a non-readers country. When I go out I always take a book with me, people look at me strangely and ask me if I´m studying for some test, when I tell the that I read for fun they make a facial expression very much like a grimace. I just laugh and go on with my life, but here I feel right at home. So thank you Astatalk and thnak you Dancingtiger for giving me the opportunity to express myself and meeting new incredible people like yourself. :) x3

Hey Everybody...

I am ADDICTED to reading books, have been since I was a little kid! If I have the time I would read 24/7 and as it is I already read 3-4 books per day (sometimes more depending on the length) if I have a day off! When I read I get so involved in a book that when people talk to me I will know they are saying something but it will take me a few minutes to realise that they are talking to me and then I have to ask them to repeat what they are saying!

I am a history student, in New Zealand, but I cannot stand reading historical books, just a little quirk of mine (can't stand historical movies either!). I read a lot of romance books - I always enjoy seeing how people interact within their relationships and how they make it work. I read nearly any sort of romance, particularly enjoying the paranormal and fantasy romance, military/alpha male romance as well as the bdsm aspects and the multiple partners.

My quirk when reading series is that I won't read the series if it is about the same character =) A lot of people have suggested reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels but I can't pick them up due to the fact that the books revolve around her the entire time! I do read a series if it is focusing on the same group of people but in each book there are different main characters i.e. Midnight Breed series and Black Dagger Brotherhood series (which are two of my favourite series!!)

=)

Hi dear people!!!! i'm an avid reader, i love books, its my addiction, and i'm thankful for that, better be addict to books than other things, that is my thought... my mother started this thing of mine with books when i was very young. she would read for me and my sister a book one day, and we would ask for that same book all the week (the kind of book i'm referring are that books for children, with lots of pictures and one line of story, I probably had two to three years old) since then i read, i fantasize, its the first thing i do to relax... i just love to read

Hi

I am a voracious romance reader. For me if I was given 24 hours to read, it is not enough. I like to read round the clock, hate sleeping or eating. All free time is spent reading & reading. My aim in life was to be a librarian or become a bookshop owner, but unfortunately I had to give up that dream.

I love to read Harlequins, Historical / Regency / Medieval Romance stories.
