OS SupportPost your problemDisk defragmenter could not start

27 Jun 2009, 09:16

Hi friends,

I have a problem with the disk defragmenter.
When I open it from accessories an error message like " Disk defragmenter could not start" is coming.

After that I scanned my whole computer with AVG internet security.

AVG found hidden rootkits ( which are not removable ( system files ) ).

Is this the reason y the defragmenter could not start. or any other reason ?

If u know the solution please reply how to get rid off the rootkits and the working of disk defragmenter.

Thanking You.

Regards,

Ramesh Junju

Check the 'page file'

1. Goto 'control panel'
2. Open 'system'
3. Click 'advanced' tab
4. Click 'settings' under "performance"
5. Click 'advanced' tab
6. Click 'change' under "virtual memory" and make sure "no paging file" isn't selected. (If it is, then set to "Let Windows configure automatically" and "Reboot".)

If that doesn't work
1. Ensure that you are logged on as an administrator with full system access rights
2. Enter Command Prompt.
Click "Start" -> "Run..." -> type "cmd" in the "Open:" dialog box (without the qoutes)
3. Switch to your windows\system32 directory by typing "cd \windows\system32" (without the qoutes)
4. Type "regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll" and press Enter/Return (without the qoutes)
5. Type "regsvr32 dfrgui.dll" and press Enter/Return (without the qoutes)

If still the problem persists
1. Go to C:\WINDOWS\INF directory,
2. Right click the DFRG.INF file and select INSTALL.

Have you tried check disc ..

Boot up in safe mode (holding down F8 after POST, OR Start-Run- type in "msconfig" [without the quotes], click on the Boot.INI tab, and select /Safeboot about half way down the window - just uncheck it in safe mode to return to normal - and reboot).

Now go to 'My Computer',open it right click your c ( main drive that your operating system is on ) and select 'Properties', then when the new window pops up, click on 'Tools' and select the check now button. Then a small window will pop up tick both boxes and click 'Start'. It will give you a message that it wont do this until you restart your computer, do so ... let it scan and fix bad sectors on your disc. Then after it's done (which may be some time) go to 'Start/All Programs/Accessories/System tools', click on 'Disc Defragmentor'. See what happens.

Nothing new in it. Already this was suggested which unfortunately didn't work. You can look at the first method of solution.
