Don't use windows 7. It is under test stage. only Release Candidate version has been released.

You can use Linux. No problems.

If you want to use windows consider XP or Vista 64 bit editions.

yep, same as BOSS, wouldnt recomend Win 7 (i am running it right now, so far no problems [Win 7 build 7100] but it will expire in a year so dont count on it too much) you could try it on a double boot like me but just do not rely only on a test OS

It depends really,

Looking at your spec I am guessing you don't do much gaming so Linux wouldn't be a problem. I would avoid Win 7 at the moment unless you are something of an enthusiast. The problem with 64bit os's at the moment is that there are still relatively few programs that make use of a 64bit os. Looking in my Program Files folder for the 64bit programs there are very few, there are the basic bundled vista programs which can run in 64bit, e.g. sidebar, defender and mail etc. The others are microsoft office which has a 64bit mode, some logitech programs for my mouse and webcam, 7-zip and winzip esque compression utility and ffdshow for 64bit windows media player.

There are still some compatibility problems with 64bit web browsers, there is currently no 64bit version of adobe flash player which renders the 64bit version of IE fairly useless, tho u can still use the 32bit version with no probs.

Unless you are a gamer as 64bit support and performance for games is increasing I don't believe there is point in upgrading.

There may be some other applications which would see a benefit such a image editing (photoshop) and encoding (divx) but as I don't do much of either I couldn't really comment.

My opinion would be to hold back on upgrading till u need a new pc.

Yeah, if you are doing heavy duty stuff on your pc then 64bit is the way to go, 64bit apps are not as scarce as they used to be as developers see the increase in demand for 64bit compatible apps. All major apps are 64bit compatible.
