G'Day everyone,

We (me & wife) are having a Website created. We've got a name and a host. A lot of it will be downloads of MP3s & Vids and Lecture transcripts (PDFs). The Designer is waiting on me to provide a 'road map' so he can start programming the back pages. Then we create the front page.

So that's gonna take time. I want to start uploading the MP3s and Vids now. He says to wait for the back pages (?) so a destination is ready for them.

Here's the question:

Why can't I just create one big folder call "My Uploads" in the website now and then later transfer the files to the correct folders when the website is finally created?

It can be done, but the Designer is right in a sense that it would not be wise to release the site prematurely.

I would suspect that the designer knows things will change. Once a structure is in place, then things can be added as needed. But if you put everything into a folder but then decide to organizationally move things around then it can add to the effort of keeping things clean. This may be too late to suggest, but why not get an account at an online hard drive, such as skydrive.live.com (yes, it's microsoft but it's free and I use it for my classroom). You can upload and make available then have the material for your own site later.
