How to post a HijackThis log:

What is HijackThis ?

HijackThis™ is a free utility which quickly scans your Windows computer to find settings that may have been changed by spyware, malware or other unwanted programs. HijackThis creates a report, or log file, with the results of the scan.

IMPORTANT: HijackThis does not determine what is good or bad. Do not make any changes to your computer settings unless you are an expert computer user.

When to use it ?

-- In OS support section of asta, we use HijackThis to analyze whether your system is infected or not.

-- HijackThis is a very effective tool, but it doesn't show all infections.

-- If you feel you have any viruses, or if it asked by OS support staff of asta, post a HJT log in your topic and briefly describe what problems you have. [like task manager disbled etc.,]

-- Please post HJT logs only in OS support section. Do not post in software and hardware discussions section or any other sections.

Note:
1. There is also HijackThis in castleloops site. Download the HijackThis from TrendMicro site [especially Xp SP3 and vista users].

2. You can also use the installer version of HJT, and install it in your system. Normally we use the zipped package.

Running HijackThis:

-- Save the downloaded zip file in your desktop. Extract it into a folder using winzip or winrar or whatever software you use.



-- Inside the folder, there will be a single file "HijackThis.exe". Just double click to open it. The interface will look like this.





Note: I see many users using winzip or winrar. They simply double click this 'hijackthis.exe' from the zip and run it. This is not advisable because it this case 'hijackthis.exe' runs from your temporary folders. so properly unzip it in a desktop folder.

Posting a HJT log:

-- Click on "Do a system scan and save a log file" option. [very first one]



-- After a few seconds a HJT log will pop up. Just "select all", copy it and paste in your topic.



Note:
-- The log file is saved in the same folder where Hijackthis.exe is present.



-- Hijackthis saves only one copy of recent log file. If you run multiple times, the most recent log is saved. It is advisable to rename the logs.

Fixing entires using HJT:

-- Open HijackThis. Check the entries which needs to be fixed carefully as adivsed by OS support staff of asta.

-- Click on the 'Fix checked' button at the bottom of the interface.
