i assume you have it set to automatically give you an ip address have you tried to manually set your ip, subnet, default gateway and dns? its possible you have the same ip as your router in which case it wont work.

I have since reading this rung virgin broadband, and they have got me to do all sorts of checks. and they have said that is appears to be likely sort winsock problem, and my computer is not allowing me to change the ip address. unfortunalty it was an indian call centre so my understaning was a bit limited. does this make sense to anyone cheers

you may need to disable your WPS protection from your router, once router is open and both pc and laptop are connected to internet then reapply WPS protection.

here's virgin broadband setup link

Please login or register to download
or
Use full direct 100Mbit downloader

Otherwise you can start from scratch: reset netgear router to factory default(make sure you remember your isp login user and pwd)
login to to netgear router with browser type:192.168.0.1 and hit enter
default user: admin pwd: password
using the setup wizard begin new setup on router with both desktop and laptop connected. Note: make sure router is set for DHCP server to allow netgear router to assign ip's to pc.

if this does not work will need to set the broadband modem to "bridge" instead of NAT or DHCP server, this may need to be done via ISP.

I recommend starting with link I gave you first, and setting netgear router to default

If this does not work you may need to set modem to "bridge", you can access this via browser and pc hooded directly(wired) to broadband router, type 192.168.1.1 enter, your user and password should be your login, if not you can reset modem and gain access by giving new password to modem and use the setup wizard within the modem.

Your problem is within your settings between your netgear and broadband router- I think more likely netgear router

please can you use the asta key to hide your links, shensta(mod)
