m2r3 : m/m reads, reviews and recommendations!Which authors do you avoid?

11 Apr 2010, 23:02

Are there any particular authors that are in your 'do not read' list? :p And why?

For me personally some authors that I avoid are the ones who write a LOT of fluff, like GA Hauser or Carol Lynne. Their books are usually so meh, with below-average writing and plots (IMHO). Also, some authors can astound me with their ability to come up with consistently bad books : like Connie Bailey. Then there are others that you can know exactly what the book is going to be like even before you read a page - for example, you know a Sean Michael book is going to have 85% of the book with repetitive sex scenes, heh.

u got that right , I detest Sean Michael !! i find the dialogue during sex absolutely LAME.
but g.a. hauser has some okay stuff( few, true), and from connie bailey i liked "tru blu" .
i tend to avoid authors who focus on bdsm or menages.
akm miles is on my "not" list, and Chris Owen too. i know he's considered "all this, and all that", but he's not for me.

I love all those authors accept GA Hauser, lol. Ah well, to each their own. I am a BDSM NUT! Love it! Chris Owen co penned my fave books ever. To me, my no no is Bobby Michaels, Gavin Atlas (unless I just want mindless sex and no romance). Not into historicals at all.

I agree on Sean Michael; in addition that already mentioned, the dialogue she uses is totally nonsensical...conversation that doesn't really go anywhere. AKM Miles is hit or miss for me; some of her stuff is okay, but I just tried to read "Too Keen" and it was so bad I was laughing. In the middle of a hostage situation they're flirting, practically while the guns are trained on them and they're just standing there. Totally unrealistic.

IDY, you do not know how many movies this kills for me. Well, lets have sex as we are running for our lives, LMAO. Movie efectively ruined, TY. I will make sure to avoid too keen.

i'm starting to be disappointed in T.A. Chase. it seems that lately he's being so...predictable in his writings.
and i liked it so much at the beginning....

Kikyo, I'm curious, what is it about Babby that you don;t like. I have 2 issues with him. The sex is... repetative. Yeah, it is a little more down and dirty than most, which would be great, if it wasn;t the same over and over and then over some more. BUT my biggest pet peeve is that he then tries to have ever gay character they have ever come into contact with become some big large gay family. It becomes ridiculous at some points, giving money ot virtual strangers tto "invest" in a business they know nothing about based solely on the basis that if the owners are gay it is worthy of their investment, yadda yadda. Ugh, so unrealistic. I get surrounding themselves with a surrogate family, but I think ties like he tries to bind are unrealistically formed overnight and well, it just annoys me.

dead on lilifrey1!
for me , a good m/m book has to be somewhat original. but Bobby is xerox-ing sex scenes, must be smth with the smell fetish he has(not saying it's bad or anything) but he should diversify a bit, and the situations are...sappy-ish,to say the least LOL.
i also pay attention to the dialogue during sex(if any - and i don't mind if there isn't)and here it was a total disappointment. same as Sean Michael (actually, to be frank, not as bad).
i am not expecting 100% reality, coz if i wanted that i could look at my own ...ah...love life, and stuff, but still, there are many authors who can cook up smth amazing, guess this one was out of town when they sold talent.
based on what u say, i suppose he's trying to make a point:"gay guys should stick together..." all in 200 words. so no wonder it's : sex, sex,"one 4 all, and all 4 one", and sex.

LOL, I read so much, and have a HUGE TBR pile still. Right now I have about... hmmm. I would say about a thousand books that I have read, and probably another 1000 waiting to read. I am actually quite picky. Don;t like vamps or were or futuristic; and aliens? No thanks. So it can be limiting. But I have a huge library so no end in site;)

will do!
i'm just miffed that ppl don't tag stuff properly, so i find myself with eyefuls of BDSM / menages. tho i dunno how HARD they'll be , since once i figure out the idea, i'm shutting it off.
i'm such a chicken.
cheers.

To be honest, it is hard to draw the lines of how hard they will be, depending on what you have read to date. I have read some pretty hard core ones, so my definiton of hard and soft and medium has changes. So what you may consider HARD BSDM I may consdier only mid range. The think is the BDSM umbrella is so big the term encompasses so much it is hard to put a rating. I would love a rating system, but have yet to find one. So sometimes I just sigh when a BDSM book turns out to be little more than mild D/s play :|

I also hate it if there are only repetitive sex scenes. I'd like my story with a relationship build up, PLEASE. I don't know if there are specific authors I avoid. I never read Sean Michaels. But so far, I always postpone anything by Shawn Lane, Z.A. Maxfield. So far, I prefer those from M/M mystery or paranormal/urban fantasy

There are some books by sean michael I like (his SHORT ones) but my problem with the one's of any real length im disinterested after the first time they have sex because they probably won't leave the bed for the rest of the book. I don't have to an elaborate story (I actually like fluffy books, im weird like that) but im not big into sex scenes and definitely need them talking that doesn't involve the sex part.
