Hi there.
In this tutorial you will see how to find the so called "magic bite", and by changing one bite only, the program will be fully registered, all nags removed and no more watermarks on your saved work.
You will also see that by loading the main exe in Olly, we can trace into a DLL file, make the changes in the DLL file (in other words, crack it) and step back into the main exe without any problem.
The software we are going to use is: "Picture collage maker" and can be downloaded here.

You can download the tut here.

Hope you enjoy it.

You are wellcome.
I am glad you enjoyed it. It is quite amazing if you sit and think about it for a moment. There are 16 million 148 thousand and 72 bites in this program. (It took me 3 weeks to count these bites ). And you remove one single bite from that program to make it a fully registered program!
Realy amazing. |

I'm confused how you can tell which line is the nag? This is the main problem looking for these "key" lines.
Also, is there that magic byte in every program or just that one? |

You think you are confused!
That is what cracking is all about. When you open your target in Olly, (or what ever you use), the first thing you should do is to explore the software and see how it behave, what limitations there are and so on. Normally it is very easy to bypass trial time limitations. In this case a watermark is added which is more complicated to crack. Each and every target have more than one way to crack. In this case you can by-pass the trial and put a return at the entry point where the watermark is called and the program will work the same. It is up to you to choose the option that suits you the best. Remember, a tutorial is only a guide to show you the basics. It does not mean you had to do what the tut say. I have seen tutorials that are 15 min long explaining how to crack a program and when you start to explore the software at a later stage, you have a good chance to find a quicker or better way to do it.
For your second question: Software are devided in three groups. 1) Easy to crack 2) Intermediate and 3) Hard to crack. I would say that most of the software in catagory 1 and 2 will have a so called "magic Byte". The problem is that they will be located at different places and they will not have the same format. It can be for example a "test al,al" or "test al,bl" or "mov al,1", just to mention a few. There are many of them and it is up to you to find it.
The key-word is still: Practice and more practice untill you become perfect. (or almost perfect!).
